Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country enclaved in South Africa. It is situated in the Maloti Mountains and contains the highest mountains in Southern Africa. It has an area of over 30,000km2 and has a population of about 2 million. (Source: Wikipedia).
Lesotho is a mountainous country with four ecological zones namely, Foothills, Senqu Valley, rural areas and urban arears. Most of the disadvantaged communities are found within the rural areas. Therefore, children and their families in the rural arears need early childhood development programs to address some of the challenges faced. According to the Integrated Early Childhood Care and Development Policy (2013) the period of early childhood in Lesotho is between 0-5 years. ECCD work was started by women groups in 1972 to take care of children as they started being employed in significant numbers.
Lesotho recognizes that ECCD is about caring, education, general childhood development (physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, and moral), health, nutrition, hygiene & protection for children aged 0-5yrs. Nhaka Foundation is working to provide holistic context based, culture specific and community co-designed programs in Lesotho.
